A Sanpete County Planning Commission meeting tonight will help determine whether or not Geneva Rock receives the county’s blessing to operate a gravel pit just west of Sterling—a gravel pit Sterling’s mayor says the town doesn’t want.
In order to make a decision, planning commissioners may have to clarify the county’s land-use ordinance, which may require them to divine the intent of people who drafted the ordinance years ago. Planning commissioners will also have to decide between the landowner and the company who seek to maintain the site, and the residents of Sterling who, the mayor says, don’t want it in their backyard. Or the planners may have to help find a compromise between the competing interests. Sanpete Messenger
